For
over 11 years Rod was a licensed professional Hunting Guide
on South Texas ranches and the famous King Ranch. He guided
white tail deer, Nilgai antelope, elk, wild hog, turkey, pheasant, duck
and quail hunts. Rod used this source of extra income to fund his music
career. He was asked to conduct Buffalo hunts as well, but refused
because of his Indian Heritage. Rod also resided in old Mexico
for a year where he guided bobwhite quail and duck hunts. He would have
stayed longer in Mexico, but he was shot at twice during two separate
instances with open machine gun fire by the Mexican Army.
After the second encounter, Rod decided the Lord did not want him in
Mexico!
Rod
is an accomplished Welder and has built several Safari Style
Hunting Rigs. Below are photographs of his last Monster Truck
creation. This Chevy truck is a 4 wheel drive dually, with a fully
blown 454 V-8 engine. The truck features 16 floodlights, police style
switchbox, dual ranch radios, outside stereo speakers on both decks,
satellite Global Positioning System, 2 cellular phones, color
television, Safari Film Cameras, custom gun racks, electric fan cooled
dog compartments and a 40 gallon water tank. This awesome vehicle
weighed an impressive 6 tons (that's 12,000 + pounds!) when fully
loaded. Movie superstar Tommy Lee Jones offered to buy Rod's
creation, but Rod graciously declined stating "I need it for work."
Rod was also a Professional Dog
Breeder & Trainer. His favorite breeds were the German
Shorthaired and English Pointers. For several years, Rod's kennels
hosted 40 First Class Bird Dogs. He purchased dogs mainly from
Tennessee and Alabama. During his hunting and guiding career, Rod had
the pleasure of meeting many celebrities such as Charlton Heston,
Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Randy White, Tony
Dorsett, General Schwartzkoph of the Desert Storm campaign, then
Texas Governor George Bush, Robert Stack, George Strait,
former Vice President Dan Quayle, as well
as numerous Senators and Congressmen. Rod also hosted
hunts for the Houston Astros and the retired NFL
Quarterback League.
Boxing & Bull Riding
Rod has pursued several other
interests, including Boxing & Bull Riding. For a year he
trained under the supervision of a Golden Glove Champion who won
this coveted title 3 times. After months of strenuous training,
Rod weighed in at an impressively cut 232 pounds in the open Heavy
Weight Division. He left the ring winning 9 fights, with 2 of them
being Knockouts. He lost 2 fights by decision.
Rod later pursued several Bull Riding
ventures which really began as a personal quest. He learned the basics
from rodeo friends and rode only 4 successful rides out of 26
attempts. He tried this for about 4 months "just for fun" every
other weekend. But after 4 broken ribs, 1 dislocated back disc, 2
concussions and a chipped tooth, Rod decided that God did not wish for
him to become a Bull Rider either!
